4MAT and Integrated Curriculum

The two key elements of 4MAT instruction are:

  1. A commitment to a central concept
  2. A connection to learners based on the concept.

4MAT naturally lends itself to meaningful curriculum integration, because the approach is entirely learner centered.

For example, a teacher designing a unit on "Christopher Columbus" would:

  1. Define a central concept, possibly Exploration.
  2. Consider an Essential Question that would be answered in the unit, for example, "Why do humans have a basic to explore, to push boundaries?"
  3. Build a Connecting activity to open the unit with, for example, create an classroom experience in which learners can feel what it feels like to be confined, leading to a need to explore outside those confines.

The rest of the unit would unfold from that starting point, referring back to the central concept and essential question throughout.

Overview of Live Training Opportunities

Entire courses of study can be defined based on central concepts and connections to learners. The result is an integrated curriculum that means something to learners.

A Concept-Based, Learner-Centered Biology Example

In the following example, an entire biology curriculum has been defined based on a conceptual framework. 4MAT designs accompany these theme, complete with the inherent connections to learners.
